What is testing and screening?

Testing and screening are in-office procedures that evaluate your physical and mental health or assess for certain substances. Though testing and screening are often mentioned together, they’re actually two different things:

Screening

A screening procedure analyzes a blood, urine, or saliva sample for the presence of drugs and alcohol or to look for common health problems like high blood sugar, nutritional deficiencies, or hormonal imbalances.

Testing

Testing assesses your health or physical abilities based on a set of specific guidelines. For example, a respirator fit test determines whether your respirator mask fits properly. If you fail the test, the team can make recommendations that allow for a tighter, more comfortable fit.

What type of testing and screening is right for me?

The type of testing and screening that will most benefit you depends on your age, health history, and the reason for your appointment.

If you need to complete a DOT exam, the team might order a urinalysis and a DOT drug test. If you visit the office for an annual physical, the team might recommend a complete blood count (CBC), a cholesterol test, and a thyroid panel.

Following a comprehensive review of your medical history and a physical exam, the team can make recommendations that align with your needs.

When will I receive the results of screening and testing?

The time that it takes to receive the results of your screen or test depends on the procedure. In-office offerings like pulmonary function testing and respirator fit testing provide immediate results. 

The results from blood panels or urinalysis typically take three or four days. As soon as the team receives the results of your tests from the laboratory, they give you a call and walk you through them.
